Lions take golf tourney crown / October 04, 2012
The Halifax County Middle School golf team continued its unbeaten run Monday, securing the Southside Middle School conference championship with a round of 172.

Matt Ratliff led the Lions with an outstanding round of 39. Jamey Binner was second with a round of 43, while Luke Newbill had a 44 and Kaleb Cole shot a 46.

Coach Charlie Payne expressed pride inh the Lions season, which ended with the conference title clinching run at Kinderton CC in Clarksville.

The Lions also claimed the regular season crown.

The Lions had six golfers who shot consistent numbers, with a cumlative scoring average below 180 for the matches.

He called that kind of production excellent for this level.

The Lions have a very solid feeder program for the HCHS golf team, which made the Northwest Regionals again this week. Payne expects to send 12 players to the high school team next season.

It’s critical to the golfers’ overall development to get started early, and HCMS golf has accomplished that goal, he said.

HCMS won its second consecutive conference title this season, after winning conference crowns in 2007 and 2009.
