Mabe wins district title, Comets fifth in wrestling district tournament

SoVaNow.com / February 05, 2018
Franklin County won the team Piedmont District wrestling title, while Halifax County High School finished fifth.

Halifax had one district individual champion, Tyler Mabe at 152, with Shon Ballou (138) and Jacob Abedeljalil (285) second.

“We took seven wrestlers today, and ended up with three wrestlers competing for championships, one finals championship with Mabe winning at 160, Shon and Jacob having solid days finishing second, Hudson and Rahquez wrestling back to finish third in the consis, and Jonathan having our other podium finish with a fourth,” coach David Riddle said.

“This speaks volumes for the determination of this group. While we have struggled with team scores due to the weigh classes that we haven’t filled for various reasons has been tough when you look at team score. But his group brings their all every time they come out on the mat,” said Riddle. “To come four points away from finishing in the top half of the district with the smaller group that we have numbers wise is tremendous. This group has given it all the entire season. Our hats are off to them for the work they have put in,” he said.

“We will be taking a few of our wrestlers up to regionals this weekend. Hopefully the momentum from this tourney can carry over into that as well,” said Riddle.

Team scores: 1. Franklin County 167; 2 Patrick County 135; 3. Tunstall 118; 4. Bassett 92, 5. Halifax 88; 6. GW-Danville 81; 7. Martinsville 40; 8. Magna Vista 30.
