Mecklenburg YMCA flag football kicks off May 4

SoVaNow.com / April 07, 2021

The Mecklenburg County YMCA announced this week the organization is offering flag football this spring as a sports option.

The local Y football team, The Mecklenburg Knights, were unable to play last season due to the pandemic. As various recreational sports programs continue to chart a path on how to best address a return to sports while still in the midst of COVID-19, the YMCA feels this program will be in the best interest of the kids and their families.

Malyka Walton, program director, said the season will teach the fundamentals of the sport. She noted that hopefully flag football would attract more players to join the Mecklenburg Knights football squad. The Knights are the YMCA’s tackle football team that holds its season in the fall.

“YMCA flag football is designed to teach the basic skills of flag football to those who have never played the game and improve the skills of those who have,” Walton said. “[The] focus will be on throwing, catching, rules and regulations of the game, team work, sportsmanship, and fair play for all.

“We are hoping this flag football program helps us recruit more kids for our Knights program.”

If interest and participation is good for the spring session, a summer program could follow, she said. The league will accommodate kids from ages six up to middle schools ages 12-14.

Registration is open now at both the Clarksville and Chase City YMCAs.

Signup by April 25 for free; after that date there is a $10 fee.

“Sessions will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. at the Boydton Town Park,” Walton said. “Flag football will start Tuesday, May 4 and run for four weeks.”

Walton said for those with more questions before signing up she can be reached at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). You can also call your local YMCA.
