The 2012-13 basketball season gets under way this week at Bluestone as the Baron boys and girls varsity squads prepare to take on a pair of old rivals from their days together as members of the Southside District.

The boys and girls teams are slated to open Wednesday against the Greensville Eagles. The boys will host the Eagles at Baron Gym with the action starting at 6 p.m., while the Lady Barons will hit the road to play their opener in Emporia.

On Friday, the boys and girls will face off against cross-county rival Park View, with the girls traveling to South Hill and the boys hosting the Dragons in Skipwith. Game times start at 6 p.m.

Bluestone will kick off its James River District schedule next Monday with the boys and girls taking on Cumberland. Once again, the boys will be playing at home with the girls going on the road. The Lady Barons get their first home game next Wednesday with a repeat engagement with Greensville, while the boys travel to Emporia to take on the Eagles.

The Bluestone boys are being led this season by first-year coach Dwayne Shell, a former basketball coach at Kenston Forest School. Shell’s experience includes serving as assistant boys basketball coach at Kenston Forest and before that, at a private men’s college in Washington, D.C. He was also assistant basketball coach and head baseball coach at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville and in 2003 was the head basketball coach at SVCC.
