Post 8 streaking with 11-0 drilling of Martinsville South

Heading into a holiday break, the American Legion Post 8 Junior baseball team has built a four-game win streak.

Post 8 drilled Martinsville South 11-0 Thursday at home. Post 8 won by the mercy rule, ending the action after the Martinsville fifth.

Post 8 is 4-3 and do not return to action until July 9. A scheduled Friday game was postponed.

Post 8 collected 10 hits. Post 8 got a 2-for-2 outing from Joey Duffer, with a single and a double. He had one RBI. Jared Dawson had a two-run single in the third.

Luke Fulcher belted a two-run triple in the fourth.

Kyle Barker also had a two-run double. Nathan Comer also doubled to lead off the fourth and later scored.

Barker threw 51 pitches, working four innings. He yielded two hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

Jackson Newton finished in the fifth, setting Martinsville down in one-two-three order. Newton struck out the final two batters in the contest.

Post 8 head coach Josh Perkins said Barker looked solid in his four-inning stint. “He threw strikes …. The defense played well behind him, that’s what we need. The defense has got to play. The last few games, they’ve played much better,” said Perkins.

Perkins said the win streak has started to build confidence in the team.

“The kids are starting to believe they can play with anybody,” said Perkins.

“Before we can beat anybody, they’ve got to believe they can do it.”

Post 8 also hit well, and the total lineup contributed. The second time through the batting order, the players settled down and got good swings on the ball, Perkins said.

Post 8 will take a break during the Fourth of July holiday. Post 8 has two weeks following that, and then will seek to qualify for the state.

Post 8 picked up its first run in the bottom of the first. Bucky Duffer drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Joey Duffer slashed a one-out RBI double before the early threat fizzled.

Barker escaped trouble in the Martinsville second. Martinsville had two on with two out, and then second baseman Dylan Newton made a nifty catch for the final out.

Post 8 enjoyed a breakout third.

B. Duffer reached and then took second on a wild pitch. Zach Lowery had a base hit to put runners on first and third.

J. Duffer cracked an RBI double to lift Post 8 to a 2-0 lead. A Martinsville throwing error got another run home. Jared Dawson then plated two runners with his single.

Barker later erupted with a two-run double deep to left. B. Duffer then got a run home on a short fly ball that got away from Martinsville.

Fulcher later settled the mercy rule issue with a scorching RBI triple that made it 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Anthony Conner had an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 11-0.

Martinsville went quietly in its half of the fifth.
