PV girls start new year with three-game grind / January 15, 2020

The Park View Lady Dragons basketball team has played three games since the start of the year, winning two and losing one.

On Jan. 8, Park View traveled to Franklin and defeated the Lady Broncos, 63-47. The Lady Dragons continued the road swing on Friday, traveling to Courtland where they squeaked past the Lady Indians of Southampton, 36-33.

The road trip continued as the Lady Dragons next ventured to Sussex on Monday night where they were stunned by the Lady Tigers, 47-32. The Lady Dragons had defeated the Lady Tigers handily on Dec. 4, prevailing 51-22 at Park View. The Sussex team took their revenge Monday.

As of press time game stats were only available for the Franklin game on Jan. 8.

The Lady Dragons dominated the first period at Franklin, winning the frame by a 21-13 margin. Azaria Williams led the way with nine of her team-high 16 points. Teonia Watts added four points, Sophia Jansen and Deoana Watkins chipped in three each and Tyonne Montague added a deuce.

The Lady Dragon defense continued to stifle Franklin in the second period, holding the Lady Broncos to a paltry six points while putting up 14 on the offensive side. In the second, Park View’s Jordyn Jackson led the way with five points, followed by Tyonne Montague with four, Azaria Williams with a trey and Krislyn Johnson added a two pointer.

The Lady Broncos showed some strength in the third period as J. Flythe poured in 11 for Franklin. Flythe would lead all scorers with 20 points for the night. For Park View, A. Williams, Mikya Harrison, D. Watkins, T. Tatts and T. Montague combined for 12 points, staking the Lady Dragons to a 47-39 lead entering the final frame.

The Lady Dragon defense stepped back up in the fourth, holding Franklin to eight points. Meanwhile on offense, Park View scored 16 points with half of those coming from the charity stripe. Putting up points for Park View in the final stanza were D. Watkins, 6 points, T. Watts 4, A. Williams and T. Montague with two each and J. Jackson and M. Harrison with one each.

With the results from these three games, the Lady Dragons improved to 11-2, 7-2 in the district. Next up for Park View will be another road trip to Greensville County on Wednesday). The Lady Eagles are 5-4 and lost their first contest with Park View in South Hill on Dec. 6.

After an arduous string of road trips the Lady Dragons will begin to see some relief with seven of their last eight games being played at home. Park View is set to host Surry County on Friday, Jan. 17. Then they will host Bluestone on Monday, Jan. 20.
