Results improving for Bluestone cross country teams
SoVaNow.com / September 26, 2012The Bluestone cross country team, in only its second year of competition, continues to make strides as the season progresses. Baron runners are lowering their times and the boys and girls teams are increasingly competitive in the James River District. Last week at Buckingham and at Cumberland, the Barons turned in their best showings yet.
In the first meet, a quad meet with district rivals Goochland, Randolph-Henry, and host Buckingham, the Bluestone girls finished second — led by sophomore Kelsey Franklin, whose time of 25:14 ranked fourth overall. Taylor Burke, a junior, finished in eighth place with a time of 26:46, sophomore Peyton Moore was 13th with a time of 28:13, and sophomore Kristyn Owen finished in 15th place with a time of 28:49. Freshman Maggie Brown also competed, finishing the course in 30 minutes flat.
The boys team finished third in the same quad meet but closed the gap on their opponents in the process. The Goochland boys finished first, followed by Randolph-Henry, Bluestone and Buckingham. Bluestone’s top runners were Daniel Pittard, a senior, with a time of 20:44 (eighth overall), freshman Aaron Moody (21:25, tenth overall), senior Kevin Murphy (21:50), sophomore Matt Oberholtzer (22:44) and freshman Joseph Grendahl (23:25).
On Wednesday, the Barons traveled to Cumberland to compete in a tri-meet with the host Dukes and the Knights of Buckingham. The Barons were victorious in both girls and boys events, marking the first sweep for either team in the second year of the program.
The girls scored a clean sweep by recording the top five qualifying times. Bluestone was led by freshman Maggie Brown, junior Chantia Burchett, sophomore Peyton Moore, junior Taylor Burke and sophomore Kelsey Franklin in capturing a convincing win over Cumberland. Buckingham did not field a complete girls team.
The Bluestone boys faired just as well, taking four of the top ten spots en route to scoring wins over both Cumberland and Buckingham. Daniel Pittard, a senior, led the way with a second place overall finish, followed by freshman Aaron Moody (third overall), senior Kevin Murphy (fifth overall), sophomore Matt Oberholtzer (ninth overall), and senior Josh Balducci (12th overall).
The cross country teams are scheduled to return to action today, Wednesday, Sept. 26, with a meet at the Barons’ home course at Oconeechee State Park. The meet starts at 4:30.
