SoBo American punches ticket to state tournament

South Boston American has punched its ticket to the state Dixie Youth O-zone baseball tournament in South Hill, starting July 19.

South Boston American knocked out South Boston National, 6-4, in the district tournament final at the Day complex for O-zone play.

The Americans got two runs in the first inning, one in the third, and three in an exciting fifth inning to slip past the Nationals. SB American finished with six hits.

Errors plagued the National all-stars in the three-run American sixth.

Josh Dawson reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch for the Americans. Alen Lowery reached and scored on an error. Dexter Dixon also reached on an error.

Corey Moore also walked and scored in the inning for the newly minted district champs.

Alex Lowery belted a two-run single in the first for the Americans, scoring Christian Worley and Dawson, who had singled.

In the third, Daniel Lacks was hit by a pitch and scored on a RBI flyout off the bat of Lowery.

The Nationals showed grit and scored two runs in the second, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. SB National had five hits.

Ali Ferrell stroked an RBI groundout in the second, and the Nationals capitalized on an error. Austin Carlson singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

Brandon Davis reached on an error and scored on a Dillon Davis single in the fifth.

South Boston American got solid pitching work from Alex Lowery.

South Boston Nationals 9, Scottsburg 5

South Boston National racked up two runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Nationals collected six hits in eliminating Scottsburg.

Troy Ferrell slugged a grand slam in the third and added a two-run shot in the first to pace National. Brandon Davis and Austin Carlson also added RBI singles.

Scottsburg finished with six hits.

Hunter Owen socked a leadoff homer for Scottsburg. Michael Hudson also a solo shot in the second. Shawn Perkins and Sam Clark added RBI singles in the fourth for Scottsburg.

SB National 7, Scottsburg 6

Scottsburg scored three in the first, one in the third, and two in the fifth, but could not overcome SB National.

The Nationals secured the win with a five-run, fourth hit inning.

Dillion Davis had a run-scoring single, while Troy Ferrell homered. Austin Carlson smashed an RBI double and Dane Dickerson hit an RBI single.

Jeffrey Cates homered, scored twice and had two RBI for Scottsburg.
