The Bluestone girls varsity softball team defeated Cumberland 6-0 in Skipwith last Thursday.

As Bluestone began spring break this week, the Lady Barons (3-4-1) maintained their fourth place standing in the James River District. Amelia County (8-0) and Nottoway (5-0) hold first and second place, respectively. Central Lunenburg (4-3) sits in third place.

The Lady Barons don’t have any games or invitationals on schedule for this week and won’t return to action until April 23 when they take on Prince Edward (3-5) at home. The girls host again on April 25 versus Amelia County and wrap up the week at Randolph-Henry (1-5-1), April 26.

In Thursday’s game against JRD opponent Cumberland, Katlyn Shanklin helped to set the tone by setting down the Lady Dukes in order with strikeouts. Shanklin went on to record 11 strikeouts and walks on the day in earning the win.

Bluestone’s Emma Newcomb, Hannah Mull, and Devin Gregory each got a piece of the ball in the bottom of the first, but all the potential hits resulted in pop-outs for a scoreless game entering the top of the second.

The second inning was probably Cumberland’s best of scoring as they had two players on base — on first and second base after a single and a walk – with one out. The Lady Barons then went on to close out the top of the inning with a 5-3 out and another Shanklin strike-out.

Bluestone posted its first run in the bottom of the second. Shanklin had a lead off single; T’kira Tucker came on to take on base-running duties for Shanklin.

After a Chasitee Baskerville 5-3 out which advanced Tucker, Lilly Loftis came to bat and blasted a hard single. Loftis’ RBI plated Tucker for the 1-0 Barons’ lead.

Shanklin took down Cumberland on strikeouts, 1-2-3 at the top of the third. Bluestone scored one run in the third inning.

Molly Nunn reached base on an error at shortstop. With one down Mull drove a nice single to send Nunn home. Mull would be left on second as Gregory and Shanklin popped out to end the inning; Bluestone was up 2-0.

From the top of the fourth inning to the top of the seventh, Bluestone’s defense was quite good. The Lady Barons recorded eight infield outs, four strikeouts and allowed only one walk during this frame.

Bluestone had no runs in the fourth though Loftis reached base on a nicely placed single. In the fifth inning the Lady Barons added three more runs.

With one out, E. Newcomb hit a standup double. Mull followed with a single and Gregory scorched a hit for another double to send Newcomb home. Shanklin reached base on an error in the outfield and Mull and Gregory scored for the 5-0 lead.

Bluestone’s final run came in the top of the sixth. Sydney Newcomb crushed a hit for a leadoff double. Lydia Williamson hit a sac, advancing Newcomb. E. Newcomb got on base with an error at third base; S. Newcomb scored for the 6-0 final.
