South Boston 1-1 in Majors
SoVaNow.com / July 18, 2013South Boston has recorded a 1-1 record in the state Dixie Majors baseball tournament action in Buckingham County.
South Boston was slated to complete a game against Mecklenburg last night. If the locals win that game, they would meet Carroll County tonight. If South Boston wins again on Thursday night, the locals would meet Mecklenburg tomorrow night for the Virginia title and a World Series berth.
The winner goes to World Series play in North Charleston, SC., starting July 27.
South Boston vs. Mecklenburg (incomplete)
South Boston played undefeated Mecklenburg Tuesday night, but the game had to be suspended after three innings due to rain and thunderstorm activity. South Boston had a 4-1 lead after three innings.
The game was slated to be completed Wednesday night.
Ford Bradshaw was on the mound and had surrendered one run on two hits.
South Boston collected four runs on five hits. Nick Anderson had two hits, while William Worley, Joe Martin and Avery Anderson had one hit apiece.
South Boston 10, Amelia 2 (Monday)
Ryan Puryear went five and a third innings, with seven strikeouts, en route to the win. He surrendered three hits and two runs. Worley relieved Puryear in the sixth and worked an inning and two thirds. Worley had three strikeouts with no hits.
Bradshaw went 4-for-4 with a homer. Martin was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Anderson went 2-for-4. Ryan Yates went one-for-four, with two RBI. South Boston got one hit apiece from Worley, Dylan Hendricks, R. Puryear and Derek Conner.
South Boston had 13 hits in the win.
In the first, South Boston got one run on a double from Bradshaw and an RBI single from Worley. The locals scored again with four runs in the third. Bradshaw and N. Anderson started with singles. A walk to Worley loaded the bases.
Martin followed with a two-run single, and Yates cracked a two-run single, making the score 5-0.
Amelia scored in the top of the fourth, cutting the South Boston lead to 5-1. Bradshaw supplied a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead to 6-1.
Amelia scored again in the top of the fifth to make the score, 6-2. South Boston added four runs in the bottom of the sixth, on hits by Hendricks, D. Conner, Bradshaw and Martin.
The South Boston Pre-Majors have been eliminated. The local Pre-Majors fell to Amherst, 5-0, on Tuesday. The Pre-Majors finished 2-2 in their tournament. The locals had to a play a strong Amherst three of four games.
South Boston went 1-2 against Amherst. They beat Amherst Monday night to stay alive in the state tournament.
