South Boston Speedway prepares for March 9 opener
SoVaNow.com / February 21, 2013SpeedWeeks 2013 has officially begun at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Each year that signals the start of the NASCAR racing season for all divisions, including the NASCAR Whelen All American Series.
Several drivers who have competed on a regular basis at America’s Hometown Track took part in the UNOH Battle at the Beach in Daytona this week. The event, which was held on a four-tenths mile oval at Daytona International Speedway, featured the nation’s top NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division competitors.
C.E. Falk III wound up third in the race Monday night after he was spun out on the final lap of the race. Falk was leading and appeared headed to a victory before eventual race winner Kyle Larson bumped him and spun him out coming out of the fourth turn on the 150th and final circuit.
Deac McCaskill drove to a fifth place finish in the race and 2012 South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Series champion Matt Bowling was sixth.
Lee Pulliam, the defending NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion was seventh in the 29-car field and Rusty Skewes was 11th.
Many of those competitors will likely compete in 2013 at South Boston Speedway, and the season-opening event at the historic four-tenths mile asphalt oval is just over three weeks away.
The season-opening event at SBS is scheduled for Saturday, March 9 when the track will host the Danville Toyota NASCAR Whelen Late Model Twin 100’s racing program.
It will also feature action for the Limited Sportsman Division and the Pure Stock Division. The first three NASCAR Whelen All American Series events of the 2013 campaign will feature afternoon starts.
South Boston Speedway will host its annual Open Practice & Media Day on Saturday, March 2.
The annual event gives competitors a chance to test and tune their race cars prior to the start of the season, and it gives fans a chance to check out the competitors free of charge.
As usual, grandstands will be open at South Boston Speedway for the Open Practice & Media Day on Saturday, March 2, and no admission will be charged.
Registration for competitors will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 2. Pit gates will also open at 9 a.m.
Practice sessions will be held from 10 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m.
A lunch break will be held from noon-1 p.m. And, during that time, a meeting for drivers and crew chiefs will be held at 12:30 p.m.
