The Bluestone High School football program is holding voluntary workouts and varsity head coach Harry John said this is just the summer phase of preparation for the upcoming season.

Student-athletes can work out from 8 a.m.-noon, Monday-Thursday, on various aspects of what makes a complete player. John said for now it’s more about learning and technique than about football.

“This is our summer phase,” said John. “And we’re just getting the work in and not really worried about too much, football specific stuff.

“Body movements, patterns, high quality lifts, high-quality repetitions of everything — we’re really looking at technique right here.”

John said coaches are also working on helping players exceed their limits and push themselves to another level.

“Right now their limits are only about 50 percent,” John noted. “We’re trying to push them up to where they are pushing 90 percent.”

John said the coaches want the players to play to their highest ability and not leave any “gas in the tank” this season when the games actually count.

For students who still need a physical exam for the upcoming season, Sentara Chase City Family Medicine and Sentara Clarksville Family Medicine are offering free sports physicals for Bluestone athletics.

Chase City held its free physicals session yesterday. Sentara Clarksville Family Medicine will offer physicals on June 28 from 5-7 p.m.

Bluestone High School Athletic Director Dan Powell said, “Physical forms must (be) complete upon arrival to the physical clinic. This is includes ALL sections. Blank forms will NOT be accepted.”

Powell added parents can obtain a physical form at http://www.vhsl.org, under the “Parent & Students” dropdown menu at the top of the VHSL homepage.
