Tough week for softball as Lady Barons beaten by Buckingham, Cumberland

After coming off a very competitive matchup with Nottoway on Monday, the Lady Barons lost in a blowout to visiting Buckingham, 13-0.

Buckingham jumped on the Lady Barons in the first, scoring six runs in the top of the inning. The Lady Barons tried to answer, loading the bases in the bottom of the first when Mia Boswell reached on a walk, Hannah Mull singled, followed by two walks from Katlyn Shanklin and Morgan Tharpe.

Buckingham scored one run in the second. Again, the Lady Barons tried to score when Sophie Sherwood singled, as well as Meredith Finch.

Boswell reached by a single, but the Barons just couldn’t push a run across the plate. Bluestone left 13 runners on base in the game.

Buckingham scored one run in the third and three runs in the fourth. The Lady Barons did not answer, while Buckingham scored twice in the fifth to win 13-0.



Cumberland 4, Bluestone 2

The Lady Barons came up just short in their road contest against Cumberland losing 4-2 on Friday.

Bluestone scored one run at the top of the first. Meredith Finch drew a leadoff walk. Hannah Mull had a single in the first and was left on base.

Cumberland posted a run in the bottom of the first for the 1-1 tie.

In the second Bluestone’s Sydney Newcomb reached base on an error. Cumberland score again in the inning for the 2-1 lead.

The Lady Barons had one of their best innings in the third and posted a run. With two outs, Mull and Katlyn Shanklin singled. Morgan Tharpe and Lily Loftis drew walks, plating Mull for the 2-2 mid-inning score. Shanklin had a double and two singles on the day.

Cumberland posted an additional run in the bottom of the third for the 3-2 score. The Lady Dukes added one more run in the fifth for the 4-2 win.

The girls were scheduled to play Kenston Forest today, host Randolph-Henry on Thursday and finish up the week at Greensville on Friday.
