Wrestlers rusty after long break / January 15, 2018
The Halifax County High School wrestling team dropped four matches in Piedmont District regular season action Wednesday.

GW-Danville thumped Halifax, 54-18. Franklin County cruised by the Comets, 57-24 and Franklin County also recorded a solid win, 57-24. Bassett defeated Halifax, 42-26.

GW-Danville hosted the meet.

“Having been off the mat since mid-December due to break and missing out on last weekend’s tourney due to weather, we knew there was going to be a little mat rust there, and it showed at the beginning of the night,” said coach David Riddle.

“We didn’t look sharp at all in the matches that we wrestled against GW. As we got into the last two matches, I feel as though we looked a lot stronger. Mabe and Jacob were able to pick up pins against Franklin, and Jonathan, Hudson, Mabe, and Jacob were all able to pick up wins in contested matches against Bassett. Once we shook the cobwebs off we began to come together and even looked solid in a couple of the losses later in the night,” said Riddle.

“As has seem to be the case with every match we have wrestled this year, we had to deal with a couple of injuries and illnesses. We can’t seem to catch a break there. But our guys are still giving in their all every time they step on the mat. We will continue to work on the mistakes and try to cut down on what is hurting us as we go forward,” said Riddle.

HCHS results: 106, Chaia DeBow 1-2; 126, Jonathan Thornhill 1-2; 132, Preston McGhee 2-1; 138, Ethan Martin 2-1; 145, Tyler Hudson 1-2; 152, Tyler Mabe 3-0; 285, Jacob Abedeljalil 2-1.

Exhibition results: Colin Saunders 0-1, Daval Ballou 1-0.
