Lady Comets fall short against Person County

The Person County Rockets’ varsity softball team generated late offense, scoring three runs in a pivotal sixth inning rally, and held off visiting Halifax County, 3-2, in non-district action Wednesday. The Comets got a run back in the top of the seventh but fell short.

Lady Comets bounce back

Stephanie Clark made the difference with the bat and on the mound, and the Comet varsity softball team bounced back from a bitter loss on Friday afternoon. Clark outdueled Person County’s Brittany Shotwell, leading the Comets to a 1-0 win in a quality non-district matchup.

Jayvee girls roll to win

The HCHS jayvee softball team rolled into the Easter break Friday with a 9-1 win over Person County, as part of a Comet doubleheader. HCHS took control early. The Comets scored twice in the first, three times in the second inning, once in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. Halifax also had 14 hits.

Eagles win first round

In the first of what will likely be more than two battles between Western Valley District softball heavyweights Franklin County and Halifax County, the Eagles took an early advantage, then retook it in the last of the seventh inning. With the score tied at 5 with two outs in the bottom of that frame, catcher Sadie Wallace, who was down in the count 1-2, brought home Kayla Spurgeon home when she slapped a base hit to right field to give the Eagles a 6-5 triumph over the Comets, the league’s reigning champion.

Jayvees pound Franklin

The jayvee softball team improved 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Western Valley district with a 15-0 win over Franklin County Tuesday. The Comet girls scored once in the first, but then steadily broke it open.

Extended practice, especially with bunting techniques, and more opportunity to see an opponent’s pitcher. That’s what the Halifax County varsity softball team gained from its slaughter rule 15-0 win over William Fleming Tuesday at home.
