Halifax County had its final two preseason varsity football scrimmages Friday at the Football Jamboree in Danville, with mixed results. The Comets, 3-7 a year ago, got hammered by a very talented Western Branch team, 32-0, but rallied in the second scrimmage to outlast Gretna, 14-12.

The production and consistency of the receiving corps is extremely important to the spread offense favored by the Halifax County High School varsity football team. Comet fans should be reassured that the HCHS assistant in charge of this group is optimistic heading into the season opener Friday.

Comets second in WVD meet

A dominating win on one of its designated home courses has allowed Franklin County’s golf team to sprint away from the rest of Western Valley District brethren. The Eagles haven’t lapped the field yet, but they appear on their way to doing so.

Comets grade well in scrimmage

Comet head football coach Stan Hodgin came away very pleased after the first preseason scrimmage Friday against Prince Edward High School. “I thought our effort, I thought our focus, I thought our enthusiasm was outstanding. We are at least where we hoped to be, if not a little further along,” said Hodgin.

Taking charge

Patches Trent
Halifax County varsity football fans looking for improvement over last year’s 3-7 finish should take notice of one major positive for this year’s Comet edition. HCHS has an experienced senior quarterback, Patches Trent, who won’t be splitting time at the position again. Trent appears to be showing excellent leadership skills.

Hodgin addresses areas of concern

HCHS varsity football coach Stan Hodgin has several areas to address when the Comets participate in their first preseason scrimmage tomorrow afternoon in Lynchburg. The Comets will scrimmage Prince Edward High School in preparation for the season opener on Friday, Aug. 28, at Petersburg.
