Baseball boosters meet Monday

The Halifax County High School Baseball Booster Club will meet Monday, April 6 at 7 p.m. at Halifax County High School. The meeting will be held in a physical education classroom near the locker rooms. Persons attending the meeting are asked to enter the building through the auxiliary gym door.

Boys tennis lose to Glass, 1-0 in WVD

The HCHS boys’ tennis team is 5-1 overall, and 1-0 in the Western Valley district. The Comets split two matches, losing to E.C. Glass Tuesday, 9-0, after a 6-3 win over Prince Edward in non-district action Monday.

Comets prepare for district opener

The HCHS varsity baseball team has an important week ahead. The Comets, now 2-0 on the season, start Western Valley district action with William Fleming at home tomorrow. Then, Halifax has a doubleheader Wednesday with Bassett. The Comets travel to Glass Friday.

Comets fall in boys soccer

Martinsville used a fast start to defeat Halifax in boys’ varsity soccer action, 6-0, on Monday. The Bulldogs got off a fast start, scoring twice in the first 3 minutes of the game.

Lady Comets improve to 3-0

The HCHS girls’ varsity soccer team improved to 3-0 after a 2-0 win over Martinsville Monday. HCHS has been seeking to get a faster start to its games, and the Comets responded on the road.

Ferrell prepares for senior season at UAB

Former Comet Mark Ferrell is progressing through spring football at the University of Alabama-Birmingham with the goal of enjoying an impact fall. Ferrell, who came to UAB after a strong career at the junior college level, is involved in his first spring practice period for the Blazers. He has devoted extra attention in the offseason to improve all aspects of his game. “The key thing for me, to keep my starting position and to make it to the big leagues, is to work hard,” said Ferrell, who is projected at no. 1 at his position for the Blazers.

From the storied years of the semi-pro Wrappers all the way to Jeremy Jeffress, baseball has always been a big deal in this community. It was appropriate, then, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the most successful high school varsity baseball team in Comet history last Friday before the start of the HCHS-Loyalsock game.

Mix a superb early complete-game pitching performance by Kyle Long, opportunistic hitting from the offense, and sparkling defense, and you have a 2-0 start for the HCHS varsity baseball team. The Comets downed visiting Loyal sock (Pa.), the defending state champion in its classification, 5-1 on an historic night at the Blues’ field.

Jayvees fall 7-0 to Loyalsock

The HCHS jayvee baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to Loyalsock (Pa.) Friday night. The Lancers got four runs in the third inning, bolstered by two hits and to Comet errors. Loyalsock added three in the seventh, on three hits and a Comet error.
