Middle school baseball team sweeps season-opening tourney

The HCMS baseball team swept to its season-opening tournament title Saturday, defeating Northern, Vance and Tunstall at the Day Complex. The Lions (3-0) downed Tunstall in the title game.

Lion girls open season with wins over Powhatan, Diamond Fever

The HCMS softball team swept to a tournament championship Saturday, winning its own season-opening event with three wins. HCMS downed Powhatan, 12-6, Diamond Fever out of Danville, 15-4 and then Powhatan in the championship finale, 4-3.

Middle school boys and girls track teams win tri-meet competitions to open season

The HCMS track teams got out to a fine start on the season last week. The Halifax boys won a tri-meet, with 97.5 points, defeating Prince Edward (26.5) and Amelia (seven). The Lion girls also won, with 65 points. Amelia was second with 55, followed by Prince Edward with 14.

Hailey built career on old-school values

Mike Hailey always held old school values, on and off the basketball court. The Halifax County native, who will be wrapping up a 40-year career as an educator and coach in North Carolina and Virginia, is looking forward to retirement this spring. Hailey recently ended a very successful 10-year run as the boys' basketball coach at Halifax County Middle School and will conclude his public school career at the end of the academic year.
