HC South wins majors sub-district title

The Halifax County South Dixie Youth majors’ all-stars are headed to the best of three district tournament series, starting Friday.
Chase City hosts the opener, starting at 7 p.m. on its home field. HCS returns home for the second game Saturday at 7, with game three, if necessary, at Chase City on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Caregivers of Autistic Children to meet July 17

Caregivers of Autistic Children has announced that the July 17 meeting guest speaker will be Laurie Midkiff with the topic “Behavior Modifications for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Tips and Techniques for Parents, Teachers and Caregivers.” Operating as an adjunct under the aegis the Halifax Regional Hospital, the CAC provides support and information to the Halifax County autism community.

Smith rising in LMSC power structure

Nick Smith is rising quickly in the NASCAR late model power structure at South Boston Speedway.
Smith cashed a $5,000 check after winning easily in the Bailey’s 200, which featured a very strong field. It was his third win of the season here.

Pembelton holds on for limited win

Brian Pembelton held on to win an extended, 117-lap NASCAR limited sportsman feature race at South Boston Speedway Friday night.
The Amelia driver also bolstered his points’ lead in the championship chase. It was his fourth win of the season, in the longest and richest race of the season for this division.

Milam charges to pure stock win

Jarrett Milam engineered a decisive late charge, rolling to the win in the Pure Stock feature, the opening act of a packed night of racing at South Boston Speedway Friday night.

Halifax minors all-stars win district title

The Halifax Dixie Youth minors all-stars defeated Brunswick, 10-0, Sunday night to claim the district title and a berth in the state tournament in Keysville.
Halifax won the best-of-three series, two games to one. Halifax will start state tournament action Saturday against District 4. Game time is 2 p.m.

Car wash, bake sale to benefit Crimestoppers

Volunteers from Halifax County 911 and local law enforcement agencies will be holding a car wash and bake sale Saturday, July 11 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at O’Reilly Auto Parts at 4014 Halifax Road in South Boston. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Halifax County/South Boston Crimestoppers program.

Grants available to teach ‘green skills’

The Dan River Region Collaborative (DRR Collaborative) announced on Thursday that it is now accepting proposals that seek to improve employment, training, and labor market outcomes in the area of green skills. The announcement came during a luncheon held at The Gallery at Virginia International Raceway on Thursday as local officials and business leaders were joined by Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello.
