You don’t have to look far for examples of how silly our political discourse has become — just turn your attention to Sen. Frank Ruff and Del. Tommy Wright, respectively. Our state senator and neighboring delegate from Lunenburg County lent their names to a blast of hot air aimed at Gov. Tim Kaine, and, no, it had nothing to do with the balloons at Clarksville’s Lakefest celebration this weekend.

Junior boys win state crown

The loudspeakers at the Day Complex blared out the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, which was appropriate for the moment.
The Halifax County Junior Dixie Boys are headed to Enterprise, Ala., for World Series play after cruising to the state title Tuesday at the Day Complex . The Junior Dixie Boys clinched the state title with a 12-8 win over Madison Heights.

HA Belles heading to world series

The Halifax American Belles are headed to the World Series after a smashing state title run.
The local Belles slipped past Goochland Tuesday night, 5-3, to claim the state title. The win came after a lengthy mid-game rain delay.
The local all-stars are headed to Sumter, S.C. for the World Series, starting with opening ceremonies on July 31.

Debs claim state crown; next stop S.C.

Whitney Womack pitched very well, and the Halifax Debs claimed the state title Tuesday with a 13-3 win over Prince Edward.
The Debs are headed to the World Series, joining all of the Dixie divisions in the national tournament in Sumter, S.C.

Dixie Boys eliminated by Amelia

The Halifax County Dixie Boys all-stars were ousted from state tournament play Tuesday night after struggling at the plate in action at the Day Complex.
Amelia downed HC, 5-2, in a thriller Tuesday night in an elimination game. Amelia met Madison Heights for the state title Wednesday.
Earlier, HC slipped past Amelia, 1-0, in a tournament classic on Monday, while Madison Heights downed Carroll County, 7-3. HC earlier downed Christiansburg, 13-3, on Sunday.

HA Darlings fighting for survival

The Halifax American Darlings needed two wins last night to advance to the World Series.
HA met Amherst American, unbeaten in tournament play. The local Darlings are 2-1.

HN Angels eliminated from state tournament

The Halifax National Angels have been eliminated in state tournament play.
HN finished 2-2 in the state, losing to Dinwiddie in its final game, 10-9, on Tuesday night.
This was an exciting way to bow out for the locals.

HCS playing for shot at state title

Three Southside Virginia Dixie Youth Majors’ baseball programs remained in contention for the state title last night, with a berth in the World Series on the line.
Halifax County-South met South Hill last night in an elimination game, with Charlotte County waiting for the winner.

A Richmond developer specializing in historic properties has signed a contract to buy the shuttered Burlington Menswear plant in Clarksville and has even bigger plans to convert the site into a business park for green-energy companies.
