The Halifax American Darlings became the fourth local Dixie all-star team to claim a World Series berth Wednesday.
And the local Darlings fashioned a sweep of Amherst to earn a World Series berth in Sumter, SC, starting Aug. 1.
Justin Snow won the second NASCAR limited sportsman 50-lapper at South Boston Speedway, after a bruising race that saw the current division points’ leader caught up in a bruising late-race crash.
Snow held off Brandon Gdovic in a final sprint to the checkered flag by 0.434-seconds, with Tommy Peregoy holding off Jeb Burton for third.
Nick Smith continued his late season charge towards a possible NASCAR late model track championship at South Boston Speedway. Smith stood fourth in the points, 26 points out of the lead, heading into last Saturday’s 150-lap feature event at SBS, and gained more ground Saturday night.
Smith cruised to the Embarq 150 feature checkered flag, winning by 2.344-seconds over second place driver David Quackenbush. Deac McCaskill, the points’ leader, finished third, with Justin Johnson and Josh Oakley rounding out the top five.
Jarrett Milam held off a fast-closing Joey Allred, while Randy Hupp finished third in a rousing 30-lap Pure Stock feature at South Boston Speedway Saturday night.
Milam had to overcome late adversity and held on to claim the checkered flag, barely holding off Allred by 0.299-seconds. Randy Hupp finished third, 2.191-seconds off the pace.
Ryan Puryear turned in an exceptional pitching outing and the Legion team played smallball en route to a 2-1 win over Post 284 First Colonial Wednesday night in state tournament action.
Puryear went the distance in eight innings, striking out ten. He allowed four hits and walked three in leading Post 8 to an historic first-game win.
The YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County held its 4th Annual Golf Tournament at the Halifax Country Club on July 17.
The team sponsored by YMCA Board member Joel Cunningham II was the winner shooting a 19 under par 51.
