High winds pound Halifax, leaving thousands without power

Halifax County residents, especially in the central and northern reaches of the county, were buffeted by winds reaching 70 mph Friday night from a powerful storm that left Virginia in a state of emergency this weekend.

SATURDAY OUTLOOK: Heat warning in effect, cooling shelters open in Halifax County

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued an excessive heat warning which is in effect from 2 p.m. this afternoon to 8 p.m. EDT this evening. A previously-issued heat advisory is no longer in effect. Meantime, Halifax County has opened cooling shelters from 12-6 Saturday.
