The postseason run for the Lady Barons softball team came to end last Wednesday as Goochland edged Bluestone 2-1 in the semifinals of the Group A, Region B division tournament.
The Barons girls, who advanced to the semifinal round after besting William Monroe in first round regional action, were undone by a familiar foe from the James River District. Goochland entered the semifinals with a 19-3 record and hosted the game by virtue of securing a no. 1 seed in the eight-team Region B field.
The Lady Barons, seeded fifth, were not cowed by their opponent, however. The girls jumped out to the early lead, 1-0, with a run in the first inning off Goochland pitcher Jackie Tremain. That lead would stand up until the third inning, when Goochland squeezed out a run off Bluestone star hurler Kristyn Owen.
Owen had another strong outing, giving up only five hits, but she was hampered by a lack of Bluestone offense and defensive lapses in the late going. Bluestone had as many errors as hits — three each — and a miscue in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the Lady Barons’ fate.
With the bases loaded, Goochland’s Carly Plummer rapped a hard-hit ball was that mishandled at third base, allowing the game’s winning run to score.
The girls finished the season with a 16-6 record, while Goochland advanced to the Region B championship game against Dan River. Dan River won that game, 9-3, to take the regional crown, but both finalist teams will go on to compete in the VHSL state tournament this week.
