Boys soccer fall in first scrimmage

The Halifax County boys varsity Soccer team was defeated by Heritage last night in their first scrimmage of the year.

“It was a learning experience for both the Coaches and the players. Coach (Marcus) Hargrave and I are still looking for the right combination and we tried players in several positions. The main two concerns we saw included our first touch on the ball and transitioning as a team,” said Coach Frank Shealy.

“Our first touch on the ball was not productive to developing a good, controlled possession. Offensive time of possession is key in several sports and it true for soccer as well. We will continue to work on ball control in practice and as it improves, so will the team,” Shealy said.

“Transition is the other element that we will working on too. When we gain possession, the team needs to move as one. If you compare a basketball team to what we were doing last night, its like playing two or three players on offense and the others never pass midcourt. We must get better as moving together and supporting each other.

“Not everything was bad, we did a lot of good things as well. We had several good runs offensively and played pretty solid defense throughout the game,” said Shealy.

Shealy is looking for captains Andrew Wilkins and Zack King to help lead this team to a successful season.

“We have good talent throughout the lineup and will need everyone to step up in order to become a team with one objective,” said Shealy.
