Comets fail basic execution test

The Halifax County High School boys’ varsity basketball team struggled with basic execution and lost on the road to Heritage, 60-51, on Monday night.

The Comets dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Heritage put together a strong third quarter run, but the key factor in the loss proved to be Comet turnovers.

Coach Larry Epperly said the Comets had 20 turnovers and got hurt on the boards, with just 15 rebounds. Eight Comet turnovers led to 16 Heritage points on fast breaks.

The main issue at this point for the Comets is to correct the turnover issue. The Comets had a home game Wednesday with Martinsville, followed by a trip to Bassett Friday.

Heritage finished with 16 points from Malik Tyree, while the Comets got 13 points from Keyshawn Johnson and eight from Dakota Delaware.

Heritage established the game-changing momentum with a strong offensive surge in the third period, with Quinten Trent enjoying success from three-point land.

Heritage also had an edge from the foul line.

The Comets are trying to establish some early momentum before Christmas. HCHS will have its Holiday Classic Christmas tournament to work on overall improvement, before the start of what’s expected to be a difficult Western Valley district slate in January.
