Comets strike early, hold on for win

The Halifax County High School varsity boys soccer team defeated Tunstall 2-1 Tuesday.

Comet coach Frank Shealy called this “a great game.”

Goals by Jakob Markham and Nick Rosche led the Comets to the victory.

The Comets got on the score board 15 minutes in the game on a long throw that the Tunstall keeper lost. Markham was there to put it in for the 1-0 lead.

The Comets got back on the board before halftime on a long ball sent up field by Erik Gomez to Rosche. Rosche beat the defender to the ball and got a touch on the ball that just went by the sliding keeper for a 2-0 lead with nine minutes left in the first half.

Tunstall finally got on the board 12 minutes into the second half on a foul, trailing 2-1, with plenty of time left on the clock.

Tunstall had several quality opportunities to tie the game and had one beautiful shot go off the post for what appeared to be a game tying goal.

Tunstall had four shots in the first half and six in the second with three corner kicks in the second half to put the pressure on Halifax to defend.

The Comets only created five shots in the game and only one solid opportunity in the second half. Halifax also had no corner kicks.

“The fouls were relatively low with five each and I thought the game officials did a great job allowing the flow of the game to unfold,” said Comet coach Frank Shealy.

“We started slow but got it going early and held on for the win. What we learned from this game is that we have to become smarter soccer players. We must know the time, score, position, and strategy for the conditions and situations within the game. A solid performance from Halifax overall with Rosche, Ford Morrison, Matt Bain, and Tristin Yesalovich playing very well with few turnovers. As others pick up their game we will become a very good team,” said Shealy.
