Cross-country has some success

The Comet harriers had some success in the first Western Valley district preview meet Wednesday, with the boys finishing third. The Comet girls were fifth, but Halifax also had some noteworthy individual efforts.

The Comets will host the Western Valley district one-day championship meet in October at Edmunds Park.

Ethan Collie was ninth and Andrew Liegey was tenth in the boys meet. Halifax had 83 points on the boys’ side, good for third. Lucy Morrison was 16th and Laura Guthrie 22nd in the girls’ meet, giving the Comets 105 points and a fifth place finish. PH-Roanoke won the boys’ and girls’ meets.

“We ran pretty well. … It was raining and they were slipping and sliding a little bit. Everybody runs the same course,” coach Brady Taylor said.

“We have a ways to go with the girls in order to qualify for regionals as a team. It’s possible and I think we’re going to do it. On the guys’ side, we want to be in that top two,” said Taylor. “That’s what we’re working for,” Taylor said.

Comet boys’ times: Collie, ninth, 18:59; Liegey, tenth, 19:19.20; Vatsal Lal, 18th, 20:00.60. Sergio Velaquez, 29th, 21:40.11.
