Earl Thomas Murphy


Earl Thomas Murphy of South Boston died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 80. Mr. Murphy was born in Halifax County on Dec. 27, 1937 to the late Willie Murphy and Virginia Lawson Murphy. He was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Murphy is survived by two sons, Keith and Yummi of New York; two step-daughters, Kim Chappell and Karen Clark, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a step-son, Kevin Chappell of Ohio; 11 step-grandchildren: 11 step-great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Usher of Maryland and Annie Mae Murphy of Petersburg,; a brother, Lee Murphy of South Boston; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by three sisters, Nannie Link, Susie Chappell and Mildred Newman; a brother, Stephen Murphy and a devoted companion, Willie Marian Chappell.

A funeral will be held Tuesday, March 6 at 11 a.m. with services at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Charles Woodall officiating.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Monday from 1-8 p.m.at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday.
