Jayvee girls top Gretna in season opener at home


The Mecklenburg County High School jayvee girls basketball team defeated Gretna 32-24 in Baskerville Nov. 1 in their first game of the season.

Mecklenburg beat the Hawks 10-4 in the first quarter of play. Rihanna Robertson, Christon Baskerville, Kamariyea Mangrum, and Maggie Webb had a basket in the period. Erica Mason was 2-for-2 at the line.

The second quarter was a two-point frame for each team. Grace Walsh was 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Mecklenburg was up 12-6 at halftime.

Mecklenburg lost the third period 15-11. Mangrum had four points in the frame. The Phoenix won the final period 9-3 for the seven-point victory. Robertson had six points to close out the game.

The girls are at home Friday versus GW-Danville. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Phoenix: Robertson 10, Abernathy 1, Mason 6, Baskerville 2, Mangrum 6, Walsh 5, Webb 2.
