Jayvees erupt in second quarter, rout Chargers

The Bluestone jayvee boys went on a 24-9 second period scoring spree to overwhelm the Lunenburg Junior Chargers en route to a 59-25 win in the season opener on Tuesday.

Edward “EJ” Jones headed the Bluestone scoring on the night, sinking 19 points. Jones is a sophomore that will see court time with the varsity squad as well this season.

The best find of the night for the JV Barons may have been Trevor Tucker. The 6’2” freshman forward scored 16 points and was a menace for the Chargers the entire time he was in the game.

Tucker stayed active while on the court. Whether Tucker was on offense or defense his feet and hands were constantly moving and he was one of the few players – on jayvee or varsity – that consistently followed his shots up and boxed out. His rebounding was solid as he seldom let himself get posted under the goal and stayed in position to grab any garbage he could turn into points or a rebound.

Garrett Allgood, a sophomore guard, just missed hitting the double-digit mark, scoring nine points in the game. Allgood for the most part did a decent job when he was at the swingman’s position and he was the only Baron to collect points in all four quarters of play.

Bluestone went into the second quarter up by eight points at 14-6. Tucker scored six points in the frame, and Akim Simmons and Koby Alexander contributed three points each. Allgood added a bucket.

Bluestone really began to put the game out of reach in the second quarter where they surged for 24 points. Jones took the lead in the period collecting a trey, four deuces and one from the foul line for 12 points. Tucker sank six more points.

Bluestone led 38-15 at the break.

Lunenburg came out in the third period playing a lot more cohesive basketball and probably had their best defensive run during this period. Still, Bluestone posted 15 points to extend its lead to 53-22. Jones and Tucker combined for 11 points. Jones was good for seven more points.

Bluestone scored six points in the fourth quarter for the 59-25 win.

Simmons finished the game with six points, Alexander had four and freshman forward Savon Logan went two-of-two at the stripe.

Coach George Lancaster, who also leads the varsity team, said prior to the game that the Barons basketball program would focus on the fundamentals of teamwork and conditioning. The junior Barons brought those qualities to the Lunenburg game and will need to continue to build on them as competition becomes tougher as the seasons moves on.

The Barons were scheduled to travel to Buckingham on Tuesday and host Cumberland tonight, in a game that was rescheduled from Friday.
