Jayvees strong in loss to Patrick County

Several times during their regular season, the Halifax County High School jayvee volleyball team looked as though they were going to be able to lock in at a high level of play the entire match.

It was the final match of the season that all of their efforts in practice finally came together. Thursday evening, the jayvee girls played strong against Piedmont District foe Patrick County only to fall 2-1.

Halifax jumped on PC early in the match, taking set one 25-14. Key in the win was the play of Sara Vernon.

Vernon would hold points 15-23 for the young Comets. Teammate Jadyn Harlow added the final two points in the set; Harlow also posted the first four scores for Halifax in the win.

Kate Jackson, who experienced playing time with the varsity squad this year, rattled off points five through nine. The girls totaled five kills in the set along with eight digs and five serve aces.

Set two saw gritty play by both teams with the Comets sending this set into extra-points land. PC won by two, 27-25.

The Comets Shamya Hankins — also a varsity fill-in -—took over this set blasting PC for 12 serve points, seven of those serve aces. One kill, two blocks and a dig rounded out her dominating show.

Destiny Talbott had three serve points as did Abbey Duffer, one of which was an ace.

Patrick would win the deciding set 15-9. Makayla Powell paced Halifax in the last frame posting four of the Comet’s nine points.
