Johnson, four Spurs out under COVID-19 protocols

The San Antonio Spurs’ Keldon Johnson won’t be in the starting lineup against Oklahoma City tonight due to being under the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Rudy Gay, Devin Vassell, Quinndary Weatherspoon and Derrick White are the other four Spurs joining Johnson on the league health protocols.

Week 9 of the Spurs’ schedule and a Monday game versus the Indiana Pacers have been impacted by the virus. Johnson is being evaluated on a day-by-day basis and the team hopes he can return to the court by the weekend.

Johnson is in his second season after leaving the University of Kentucky following a one-year stint with the Wildcats. Johnson has been on a tear with the Spurs in 2021. After splitting time last season between the Spurs’ G-League Austin affiliate and San Antonio, Johnson has been one of the cogs of a surprisingly strong Spurs team, which is vying for a Western conference playoff berth.

Save the COVID-19 protocols, not much has slowed down Johnson’s on-court efforts this season.

Currently he is second on the team in offensive rebounds at 1.7 per game and is averaging seven rebounds on a per-game basis.

Playing in 27 games thus far Johnson is averaging 14.5 points, 7 rebounds and 2.3 assist per game. As of Tuesday evening the team was ranked sixth in the Western Division with a record of 16-11 (7-8 home, 9-3 away).

Johnson is a native of Brodnax and played basketball at Park View High School before transferring to Oak Hill Academy.
