Park View cross country starts training

The Park View cross country team will begin training this week in preparation for the upcoming season. Coach Michael Herring lamented losing an entire season in 2020 but is realistic about the team’s prospects in the upcoming season.

“To state the obvious, several of our top runners who clinched the boys district title and championship in 2019 graduated without a chance to run their senior year, including all-district runner of the year, Jacob Fadool,” said Herring. “However, it doesn’t help to dwell on things we cannot control.”

Coach Herring said Steven Rea, former cross-country coach at Greensville County High School, will be joining the faculty and coaching staff at Park View acting as assistant coach for cross country.

Former assistant coach Tamasin Swoap Reynolds will remain with the team in a supporting role but couldn’t officially commit to the coaching job due to other commitments.

“I’m anxious to work with all of my returning runners, but also excited to welcome the newcomers,” Herring said. “I have had an increased number of girls expressing interest this year.”

More girls joining the team would present some leadership opportunities for Angie Hernandez, who will run as a junior this year. Hernandez was a major contender in the Tri-Rivers District as a freshman in the 2019 season and could make some noise in the district this season.

The first cross country meet is Aug. 25 at Franklin. After that the Dragons travel to Halifax County for a meet at South Boston’s Edmunds Park on Aug. 30. The balance of the schedule is below:

Sept. 1 @ Southampton

Sept. 8 @ Franklin

Sept. 15 @ Park View (Parker Park)

Sept. 22 @ Greensville

September 29 @ Southampton

Oct. 6 @ Franklin

Oct. 12 @ Greensville

Oct. 20 @ Park View (Parker Park) Tri-Rivers District Tournament
