Payne pitches softball to 4-1 win over Person County

Seniors throw complete game, striking out 11

Emma Payne on the mound, pitched all seven innings Thursday in HCHS varsity softball’s 4-1 win over Person County.

The Halifax County High School varsity softball team defeated Person County 4-1 Thursday in a non-district matchup in South Boston.

Emma Payne was the winning pitcher for Halifax. The senior tossed all seven innings, striking out 11 with five hits, one run and one error.

The Comets scored one run in the first, two in the second and one run in the fifth to take the win off of five hits. Shamya Hankins, Jadyn Harlow, and Kamryia Woody-Giggetts each had an RBI.

After holding Person in check at the top of the opening inning Halifax’s Kamyria Woody Giggetts had a leadoff bunt. With two outs Jadyn Harlow hit an RBI single to score Woody-Giggetts.

Person went down in order in the second inning.

The Comets’ Jaci Parham led off the bottom of the second with a line drive to center field. With two outs Woody-Giggetts drove Parham home. Olivia Seamster scored on an outfield error after being hit by a pitch to get on base for the 3-0 lead.

Halifax posted its final run in the fifth inning. Woody-Giggetts worked a leadoff walk. Hankins hit an infield groundout, plating Woody-Giggetts for the 4-0 score.

Person scored its one run at the top of the sixth with a long ball to left field for the 4-1 final.

Halifax has three Piedmont District games this week. The Comets travel to Magna Vista today; host Mecklenburg County Wednesday, and Patrick County Friday to close out the week.
