Pembleton back in Victory Lane

Brian Pembelton returned to Victory lane at South Boston Speedway for the second time this season, and the Amelia driver was expected to regain the points lead in ther NASCAR limited sportsman points chase.

Pembelton finished 0.831 seconds ahead of Danny Willis Jr., with Bobby McCarty well back in third, 1.655 seconds off the pace.

Joey Throckmorton took fourth and Blake Stallings was fifth.

Willis had a limited opportunity to reel in Pembelton.

Willis stood on the pedal on the outside, trying to challenge Pembelton for the lead in a mid-race caution. The field was slowed again on lap 26 by a messy multi-car crash heading into turn two, with the no. 32 of Aaron Burnett getting the bad end of that deal.

Pembelton won the restart, but had to deal with steady pressure at that point. By lap 35, Pembelton had a car length lead over Willis, as the rest of the field began to stretch out behind the leaders.

With five laps remaining, Pembelton had the rest of the field under control. Pembelton took the white flag and cruised to his second win of the season.

“It’s a little early to be looking at points. We’re racing against two great guys with Danny and Justin for the points. Justin knows how to get it done, Danny certainly does too. It feels good to be back in Victory lane, back like we were in (2009),” Pembelton said.

Pembelton averaged 49.223 mph in collecting the win.

Justin Snow, the previous points leader, had a subpar sixth place finish. Chuck Lawson, Kyle Appel, Austin Thaxton and J.D. Eversole rounded out the top ten.

Pembelton won by 0.831-seconds over Willis.

Willis made some challenges but did not have enough for Pembelton.

“We had a decent car, we weren’t handling that good all day, really,” he said. The team made some changes but got wicked loose early.

After the first restart, Willis got better handling.

Willis was biding his time, “but right there at the end, the car just went away from me again and I was lucky to be able to hold on to second.”

Pembelton led all but one lap of the race.

PURE STOCK: Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, ran his season win total to three victories by sweeping the night’s pair of 30-lap races for the Pure Stock Division.
