Down by one point entering the fourth quarter, Mecklenburg County went 3-of-15 from the foul line to lose to visiting GW-Danville 68-59 in a Jan. 17 Piedmont District matchup.
Mecklenburg (5-10) trailed 47-46 at the end of the third period after playing a solid first half.
GW-Danville sped out to a 0-5 lead. Mecklenburg pulled ahead 7-5 on Tomar Logan’s three pointer. The teams tied at 9-all, then the Phoenix went on a 6-0 run for the 15-9 lead.
GW fought back but Mecklenburg stayed focused and won the period 19-16. Logan and Derrion Brooks had five points each in the frame. Brooks paced Mecklenburg on the night with 14 points while Logan added 12.
Following a Brook’s trey that tied the game at 19-19 in the second period, the teams battled to a 24-24 score with 4:42 left in the first half. The Phoenix went to halftime down 36-34.
Brooks knocked down 12 first half points, was 2-of-2 in the first half from the line and finished the game 4-of-4.
Mecklenburg and GW’s defenses were on display as the Phoenix played a sound third period, winning the frame 12-11 to trail by one at 47-46 as the fourth quarter began.
The Phoenix took the 51-49 lead on Kratavion Thomas’ deuce bucket with a little under six minutes remaining in the game. GW responded with an 11-0 run with the Phoenix going 1-of-6 at the foul line during this time.
Mecklenburg went on to close the score to eight points at 60-52 but came up short at the end, 68-59.
Amonta Farrar had 10 points for the Phoenix. Alvian Lewis and Cameron Hayes added eight points each.
The Phoenix shot 10-of-26 for the game from the foul line.
On Friday, the varsity boys traveled to Martinsville High School and lost the Piedmont District matchup 60-36.
The boys host Bassett High School Friday, at 7 p.m.
