Robert Lee Furges


Robert Lee Furges of South Boston died Friday, May 6 at the age of 98.

Mr. Furges was born in Semora, N.C., on May 26, 1923 to the late Phillip Furges Sr. and Rosa Faulkner Furges. He was married to the late Bertha Carrington Furges and was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church.

Mr. Furges is survived by three sons, James Allen Carrington (Ruth) of Oxon Hill, Md., Melvin Furges (Ann) of South Boston, and Darryl Furges (Robyn) of Durham, N.C.; three daughters, Jane Potts (Walter), Arnetta Roberts (Harold), all of South Boston, and Carolyn Brewer (Lowell) of Alton; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Brandon of Philadelphia, and Alice Mitchell (Fred) of Roxboro, N.C.; two brothers, Willie Furges of Alton, and Shank Furges (Marie) of Newark, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including the devoted Roy Hill, Ellis Williams, Cynthia Easley and Mary Palmer.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 10 siblings: Jannie Russell, Pattie F. Coleman, Catherine Cunningham, Minnie Bolton, Ossie Martin, Mamie Thomas, Mary Ann Wilson, Sam Hamlett, Bennie Furges and Phillip Furges Jr.

A funeral will be held Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at Cross Road Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Stanfield, eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Friday from noon-6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel.
