South Hill man dies in Sunday morning gunfire

Homicide probe ongoing; two shootings in town appear to be related, say police

Authorities are still searching for one or more suspects they believe to have been involved in two South Hill shooting incidents that left one person dead. The two incidents occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 17 and are believed to be related to one another.

Just before 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, authorities were dispatched to the Woodfield Club, located at 509 Daniel Street in South Hill for a report of a subject brandishing a firearm. Upon arrival, officers discovered a well-attended party in progress, with party goers in the parking lot as well as inside the club. Officers first searched the building for a suspect. After none was located, they began to search the parking lot where they discovered a subject inside a vehicle, deceased from a gunshot wound.

The deceased was later identified as Melvin Hendricks Jr., 26 of South Hill.

Just nine minutes after 911 dispatch received the brandishing call, another call came in, reporting multiple gunshots fired in the area of the Roanoke Avenue and Fifth Street intersection, also in South Hill. Officers responded to the area, but no suspect was located. No one was injured.

According to South Hill Police Department, both incidents are believed to be related to each other and are being investigated as such.

“Many witnesses from both locations were spoken to and multiple suspects have been developed,” a press release from South Hill Police stated.

“Detectives are working hard investigating both incidents,” South Hill Police Captain Shane Johnson said.

Hendricks’ body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with more information is asked to call the South Hill Police Department at (434) 447-3104 or Mecklenburg Crime Solvers at 1-877-676-8477.
