Stepped-up policing brings thank you

In honor of Flag Day, South Boston Mayor Ed Owens led the Pledge of Allegiance during Monday night’s meeting of South Boston Town Council. With pandemic restrictions fading from sight, members returned to having their meetings in council chambers on Yancey Street. Council took up a light agenda and approved every item with no discussion.

Returning to address the group was Angela Cameron. At the last work session, Cameron sought help from the town to enhance the police presence along Hoover Street where her mother lives. Recent gun violence in the neighborhood has affected her mother, who once enjoyed regular walks and is now afraid to go outside.

On Monday, Cameron came with praise and appreciation for the South Boston Police Department for the immediate response by officers in ramping up patrols through the neighborhoods along College Street and Gygax Avenue.

“I’d like to thank the police chief [Bryan Young] for his immediate action after the last meeting. By the time I got to my mother’s house the chief was already there visiting my mom. The presence of the police vehicle at the church has created a reduction in the traffic in the neighborhood,” said Cameron — adding the neighborhood is back to business as usual, in a good way.

In other business matters Council approved the adoption of the FY21-22 budget. Council approved the adoption of FY21-22 fee and tax schedule. New fees include: Solar Application fee of $1,200, plus engineering consulting fee, and 15 percent of the consultant charge. Rezoning and Special Use Permit fees will be increased to $250 from $175. Parking fees will increase to $25 from $10 and an encroachment fee for right of way access will be a minimum fee of $150.

» Council amended the Town Code to align with wastewater changes issued by the Halifax County Service Authority.

» Council re-appointed Ernest Vass to the Southside Planning District Commission Board.
