Thomas Edward Shepherd


Thomas Edward (Tommy) Shepherd died peacefully at home in Halifax on May 30, 2023. He was born in Gretna Sept. 21, 1930 to the late Clayton Edward and Frances Haley Shepherd.

Mr. Shepherd served both in the United States Marine Corps and in the United States Army with tours of duty in Korea and in Germany. After his military career, he and Barbara settled in Halifax where they have lived since 1966. Mr. Shepherd worked first at South Boston Hospital and then at Halifax Community Hospital (Halifax Regional) from which he retired. After retirement, he volunteered there for 15 years. Other interests included membership in the Halifax Lions Club having served a term as president. Tommy was also active in and enjoyed the fellowship of his bowling league.

Family was the top priority for Tommy. He was a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather. He greatly enjoyed spending quality time with his family in Texas and the many vacation trips they took together. To have known and loved two great granddaughters was such a blessing for him.

Mr. Shepherd was an active member of Beth Car Baptist Church and a former deacon of the church.

Mr. Shepherd is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Owen Shepherd, and his daughter Ramona Shepherd Hollingshead and her husband, Andrew (Andy) of Keller, Texas. He is also survived by two grandsons, Seth Shepherd Daniel and his wife, Elizabeth, and Andrew Shepherd Hollingshead and his wife Sarah, and two great granddaughters, Hannah and Emi Hollingshead, all of Fort Worth, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sherry Dawn Shepherd, and his brother, Luther Douglas Shepherd.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3 at 2 p.m. at Beth Car.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at his home.

The family is especially grateful for the compassionate care and assistance of Henry Coleman during Tommy’s last year.
