Vehicles collide Friday near MCHS entrance

A two-vehicle crash Friday night near Mecklenburg’s new middle and high school complex just prior to the school’s first-ever football game left one vehicle overturned and sent its driver to the hospital.

The crash occurred on Friday, Sept. 2 around 6:40 p.m. at the intersection of MCHS-MCMS driveway and U.S. Route 58, after a motorist failed to stop at the stop sign. The westbound lanes of U.S. 58 were shut down while the crash scene was cleared.

According to Virginia State Police, Sarah Crowe Jones, 44, of South Hill, driving a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan, pulled onto U.S. 58 and into the path of a 2016 Hyundai Elantra driven by Cierra Nicole Harvey, 20, of Goshen.

Harvey struck Jones’ vehicle, then ran off the road to the left, struck a ditch and overturned in the median.

Both drivers were wearing their safety belts, but Harvey suffered injuries described as minor and was transported by ambulance for medical treatment.

Jones, who ran the stop sign, was charged with failure to yield right of way. Harvey was not charged. Neither driver was carrying any passengers at the time of the crash.

Trooper M.A. Wilkinson investigated the incident.

With the start of the new school year on Monday, first responders would like to caution drivers along Route 58 to be prepared for a speed limit reduction to 35 miles per hour at the school site, and to expect more traffic in the area and to be attentive when passing through.

Friday’s crash was one of a dozen reported in Mecklenburg County over the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to Mecklenburg Director of Emergency Communications Ben Duncan.
