National Activity Professionals Week is recognized by Health Care Centers across the country from Jan. 17-20. During this week, Woodview and Seasons at the Woodview would like to salute the many activity professionals who work diligently to create and offer invitingly unique programs designed to provide and encourage educational, social, physical and spiritual opportunities for residents.

Together Woodview activity staff members Dawn Tuck, Staci Spell, Randy Savage, Mildred Hayes, Sharon Brogden and department manager Linda Spangler assess, design and implement a wide array of specialized programs that are supportive of a multitude of individual resident interests. These programs include, but are not limited to, individual visitation as well as group activities, special events, community and volunteer events.

According to research, and widely accepted by society, longevity of life and personal happiness are both directly related to an active lifestyle, supportive family ties, personal friendships, physical exercise, healthy eating, cognitive and spiritual involvement. Toward that goal, the activity staff develops monthly calendars that promote exercise, spiritual reflection, music, horticulture, socials, glee club, intergenerational involvement, pet therapy, relaxation therapies such as spa day or Tai Chi, educational opportunities and much more.

Attending workshops throughout the year, staff members agree that there is much enjoyment gained by offering new and untried activities for residents. Many of the new activities become an integral part of the monthly calendar which is an ever changing tool that continues to grow and develop in order to meet the ever changing needs of the resident population it serves.

Activity staff not only assure life enhancing opportunities for their customers but they also work to meet rigorous state requirements for documentation concerning residentsí needs, care plans, improvements and participation in activities. Department members also publish The Woodview Whistle newsletter, newspaper articles & photographs and also provide activity services for Seasons at The Woodview and Halifax Regional Hospital sub-acute center.

When all is said, every activity department process or practice works toward the common purpose of validating, supporting and providing a quality life experience for residents.
