No new money, no new projects

VDOT Resident Highway Administrator Joe Barkley brought a bleak message to County Supervisors on Monday night, telling them “there’s no need to schedule a public hearing on the County’s Six Year Plan because there’s no state money to fund any new projects.” Barkley reminded board members that the County’s Six Year Plan approved last year included projects totaling $8.1 million. That amount, he said, has been cut to $3.6 million, a 56 percent reduction. “So there are not a lot of decisions to make, and I see no need to revise the Six Year Plan this year,” the VDOT official said. Barkley said yesterday that this year will be the first time he can remember in his work here that the County would not hold a six year plan hearing, “but with no money, there’s no need,” he said.
