Don’t pull out the shotgun - this is ‘Rubber Duck’ season. The second annual ‘Ducks On The Dan Derby Duck Race’ is coming up May 16, 50,000+ duck adoption papers have arrived and you can pick up your duck adoption papers for the big race at store locations throughout Halifax County. There will also be adoption papers inserted in your local newspaper very soon. Simply pick up a form, fill it out and mail it in the envelope provided in the adoption papers. OR, if you prefer to adopt a duck in person, you can come to DUCK CENTRAL at 432 Main Street in Town Hall in downtown South Boston. There will also be a duck store opening in downtown soon, ‘It’s Just Ducky’, with adoptions available and all sorts of Duck merchandise available for sale. (Look in your paper for the opening coming soon.)

Your adopted duck(s) will be entered into the big race on the Dan River on May 16 with a chance to win one of over 20+ prizes worth over $10,000. The Grand Prize is $5,000 cash. There’s also a 50 inch plasma television, a six bedroom lodge stay for a week at any State Park and much, much more. For a list of all the prizes and more information on adoptions and the race, please go to our website, http://www.ducksonthedan.com.

“Last year’s race was such a tremendous success that we sold out of adoptions, so this year we have made available 10,000 ducks for the big race,” stated Jerry Van Eimeren, Executive Director of Destination Downtown South Boston, Inc., sponsor of the race. “This is our biggest fundraiser for our charity and your adoptions help in our mission of the restoration and revitalization of the Historic Downtown South Boston Business District to preserve our heritage and add to the economic development of our community.” VanEimeren further stated, “Your adoptions will also help several other Halifax County charities.”

This year the title presenter of our race is Italian Delight and on Saturday, April 25t you can go to Italian Delight and have some fun on Inflatables in the parking lot and meet ‘Quacky,’ the mascot duck for the event. You can also adopt a duck right there on that day.

Don’t forget, the race is Saturday, May 16 in Constitution Square in Downtown South Boston. It will be a big family day in the Square with lots and lots of inflatables and games and prizes for the kids. There will also be lots of great food, music and karaoke. The festivities start at 11a.m. and go until 5p.m. The big race will start at 3:00 pm with 10,000 ducks being dropped all at once off the 501 bridge. You can also adopt ducks up until 2:30 pm. Believe me - you don’t want to miss this event! (But, you don’t have to be present to win).
