South Boston rec center renovated with upgraded restrooms / April 29, 2021
Following a committee work session Monday night, South Boston Town Council members were given a tour of the South Boston Recreation Center to show off renovations to the restrooms and other parts of the facility.

Using CARES Act funds, the women’s and men’s restrooms have been completely renovated and equipped with automatic soap and paper towel dispensers. The men’s room has a shower and a urinal much lower to the ground to ensure young boys succeed off the court, too.

“We are very excited about the boy’s urinal, they would try to aim high trying to make it in the adult ones,” said Recreation Director Matt McCargo, drawing chuckles.

A solid wall was opened up to create a new entrance to the women’s restroom and free up space. Now the women’s restroom has five stalls instead of one.

Following the tour, a number of Council members reminisced about the soft spot on the basketball court that would occasionally vex the game. One pointed to where a trash can would sit on the rec center court, catching the rain falling through holes in the ceiling.

The renovations have spruced up the recreation center. Community members are back, walking laps in the morning, using the exercise equipment, and shooting pool in the afternoons.

The South Boston Recreation Center is located at 1917 Jeffress Boulevard. For more information on activities, call 434-446-1802 and check Facebook @sobovarec.
