Bluestone girls fall in soccer opener / April 28, 2021

The Bluestone girls soccer team traveled to Farmville on Monday to take on Prince Edward in the season opener and lost in a tough second half, 4-3.

Bluestone controlled much of the first half with Emma Riegert (freshman) scoring in the eighth minute off a free kick from just outside the penalty area for the 1-0 lead. PE scored a goal for Bluestone on a long throw-in by Ella Beatty (freshman).

Bluestone posted its final score of the match when Kaitlyn Abernathy (freshman) scored on a pass from Emma Riegert at the 33-minute mark. PE scored a goal as the half ended and Bluestone led 3-1 at the break.

PE turned up the heat in the second half posting three goals to take the match 4-3. Barons coach Thomas Wells said he was happy and impressed with the girls’ efforts.

“The Lady Barons gave everything they had in this game,” Wells said. “We had some chances but could not get a goal. I was very proud of the effort we put forth.”

The girls return to action on Friday when they travel to South Hill to take on county rival Park View.
