Comet softball hammers Bassett 16-1 on the road / May 06, 2021

The Halifax County High School varsity girls softball team picked up at 16-1 road win over Bassett, improving its record to 3-0.

This is the third game this season that Halifax has won under the 10-run mercy rule.

Madison Barnes got the win from the circle. Pitching five innings, Barnes allowed only three hits and didn’t give up any walks in the game.

Kylie Satterfield had a big day plating runners, with four RBIs and a home run in fourth inning.

The Comets scored three runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth and closed out with another three-run inning.

Halifax started out the game with a leadoff walk by Kamiyra Woody-Giggetts. Trinity Martin and Barnes followed with singles; Barnes’ hit plated two runners.

Shamya Hankins hit a single to plate Barnes for the 3-0 score. Except for a leadoff single by Bassett in the bottom of the first, Barnes struck out the next three batters.

Madi Watkins and Woody-Giggetts picked up the second inning runs. Both players reached base on errors with two outs. Martin and Barnes scattered singles to bring the runners home.

The third inning saw the Comets bring big bats with three doubles by Sarah Watts, Peyton Lowery and Satterfield; Lowery’s and Satterfield’s hits were RBI doubles.

Bassetts’ lone run came off a homer in the bottom of the third for the 8-1 Comets score.

Hankins, Watts, Lowery, and Ashlyn Strickland led with some nice at bats and a walk. Lowery’s single scored Hankins and Watts. Satterfield came to bat and hit a home run to clear the bases and take the Comets lead to 13-1. Watkins had a double in the frame.

Hankins (single), Watts (single) and Lowery (double) provided the final three runs for the Comets. Watkins had a RBI single in the frame.

The Comets are on the road today, facing Patrick County.
