Comet softball takes 13-1 win over Tunstall

SoVaNow.com / May 17, 2021

The Halifax County High School varsity softball team moved to 6-0 in the Piedmont District with a 13-1 road win over Tunstall Friday.

Madison Barnes had another strong pitching day, going five innings and allowing only one run off of four hits.

A big factor in Friday’s win was the batting of the Comets’ Trinity Martin. The junior delivered five RBIs and two home runs to pace the offense.

Halifax opened the game by posting two runs in the top of the first. Martin had a single to start the game; with two outs Shamya Hankins blasted a double to score Martin. Peyton Lowery had a RBI single to send Hankins home for the 2-0 lead.

Jadyn Harlow scored in the second inning after smacking a double to lead off the batting. Halifax moved out to the 6-0 lead at the top of the third.

Madi Watkins, Hankins, and Lowery all singled with Watkins scoring on the throw to the plate. Harlow had a single to send Hankins home.

At the top of the fourth Ashlyn Strickland singled to shortstop. Martin’s next bat resulted in a two-run home run. Watkins was safe at first on an error; a Lowery double would get Watkins home safely for the 9-0 Halifax lead.

In the bottom of the fourth Tunstall picked up its lone run off of a couple of doubles by K. Griffith and M. Gee.

Halifax’s final four runs came in the top of the fifth. Harlow singled and Satterfield drew a walk to get the inning going. With one out Martin came to bat and hit the second of her homeruns, scoring Harlow and Kylie Satterfield in the process. Sarah Bailey posted the Comets’ final run after reaching base on an error and coming home on a B. Bowen single.

The Comets play next Wednesday, May 26 when they travel to Magna Vista.
