The Halifax County High School varsity baseball game Tuesday against Tunstall was dedicated to Dr. Michael Priest.

Priest, a former Comet baseball player, died in a November 2020 crash in Franklin County and in his memory a charity, The Dr. Michael Priest Charitable Trust, has been established.

The Dr. Michael Priest Scholarship will be granted to the college-bound Virginia youth who best exemplifies not only outstanding athletic prowess, but also sportsmanship, individual contribution to their team or teams, community involvement, and academic excellence.

Comet baseball coach Kenneth Day said the team and school wanted to show its support for the Priest family. Day said they had an area set up to encourage donations and provide information about the charitable trust.

“We got Dr. Priest (Michael’s father James) to come out and throw out the first pitch and his family was there, his kids, some grandkids and his wife,” Day said. “A lot of the people just showed up to support the Priest family and we dedicated the game to them.

“We’re trying to get people to go to the website, raise money to support the scholarship and the trust fund.”

Day said he encourages everyone to visit and support the charity and Priest family.

Established Jan. 21, in honor of Dr. Michael Bedford Priest, a beloved son, brother, champion and friend, The Dr. Michael Priest Charitable Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to charity, philanthropy and scholarship.

Each year, The Dr. Michael Priest Charitable Trust will make a substantial donation to such important organizations as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the Special Olympics, as well as other deserving humanitarian causes.
