Comets improve to 3-1 with win over Patrick / May 10, 2021

The Halifax County High School varsity baseball team improved to 3-1 in the Piedmont District with a 9-1 road victory over Patrick County last week.

Leo Noblin took the win from the mound, striking out 11 batters and giving up one walk. The hurler pitched six innings allowing six hits and the lone run. Anthony Conner pitched one inning in relief.

Halifax posted one run at the top of the first, and four each in the third and sixth innings. The team had 13 hits in the matchup with Jackson Newton having three RBIs on the day.

In Thursday’s game Gavin Colwell put the Comets in a good place with a leadoff triple to right field. Jaxon Lloyd would draw a walk and Joey Duffer singled bringing Colwell home for the 1-0 score. Joshua Gunn hit a single but was left on base.

In the second inning the Comets went down in order but the third inning saw the team add to its ru total. Lloyd started the batting in the third and reached base on an error.

With one out Newton worked a walk to move to first. Gunn hit a hard shot to the shortstop and plated Lloyd.

Mason Hatcher then hit a single to send Newton home. Noblin ended the inning with an RBI triple to score Gunn and Hatcher for the 5-0 lead.

Save a walk by Lloyd in the fourth, the Comets were quiet. Patrick County gained their one run in the bottom of the fourth inning after PC’s J. Ponn hit a single and eventually made it home for the 5-1 score.

Leading 5-1 going to the top of the sixth Halifax opened with a groundout and a strikeout. Conwell drew the walk on the next at bat.

Lloyd singled and Duffer walked to load the bases. Newton followed with a line drive to centerfield scoring Colwell, Lloyd and Midkiff, who was in running for Duffer for the 8-1 score.

Nathan Comer would hit an RBI single to centerfield sending Newton home for the 9-1 final.

The Comets are back in action this week with three games on tap. The boys host Magna Vista today, travel to Bassett on Wednesday, and complete the week with a Friday game at Tunstall.
