Jayvee softball shuts out Magna Vista 15-0 / May 13, 2021

The Halifax County High School jayvee softball team used hot bats and defense to shut out Magna Vista 15-0 Monday.

Starting pitcher Destiny Talbott didn’t allow any hits or runs in two innings, the Comets limited this game to only three innings. Talbott got the win from the circle with Evelyn Shepperd getting in one inning in relief.

Both pitchers were also potent at the plate with Talbott sending two balls out the park and Shepperd adding a grand slam.

The Comets took the win with nine first-inning runs, five in the second and one in the fifth. All nine batters in the first inning would score as the team looped back to the top of the order.

At the top of the inning Emma Payne used an infield error to get on base for the Comets. Avery Bowen would have a single while Abby Duffer laid into a double sending Bowen home for the 1-0 score.

Kate Jackson and Olivia Seamster reached base on a single and an infield error. Talbott hit a double to score Jackson and Seamster.

In the next sequence Jaci Parham was safe on a pop-fly error while Lexi Swillie walked. Shepperd came to bat and hit the grand slam to clean up the bases; the hit took the score to 9-0 for the Comets.

Payne would single; Bowen drew a walk and Jackson and Seamster reached base but wouldn’t score in the inning.

Talbott opened the second inning with a home run. Parham followed with a double and a Swillie single. Shepperd got a nice single down the third base line and scored Parham scored on the hit and Swillie on the throw for the out for the 12-0 score.

The last two runs in the inning came when Payne and Bowen singled. Shepperd scored on a passed ball; Payne also scored.

Talbott blasted another homer at the top of the third for the 15-0 shutout.

They host Tunstall Friday to close out the week.
